Struggle on to give Hemu his due

Rewari, February 28
The Hemu Vikramaditya Foundation (HVF), a voluntary organisation, made a detailed representation to Hari Ram Arya, the newly-appointed chairman of the Haryana Swantrata Senani Samman Samiti, here recently, seeking inclusion of Hem Chandra Vikramaditya, popularly known as Hemu, in the proposed register of martyrs of the state.

The foundation emphasised upon the urgency of catapulting Hemu, an illustrious warrior of the medieval period, on a lofty pedestal of the glorified martyrdom. The HVF recounted what the noted historian Dr KR Qanaungo wrote about Hemu, “No Hindu had been covered with so many glorious wounds on the field of battle except Maharana Sanga. No Rajput wielded the sword so bravely against foreign invaders as this humble Hindu of Rewari did on the battlefield of Panipat.”

Quoting another eminent historian, Prof RP Tripathi, the HVF added, “ In the history of Delhi Sultanate, Hemraj (Hemu) was the only Hindu who had the honour of holding the exalted office of Prime Minister. He fought 22 battles and won every one of them.

The rebellious Afghan nobles were as much afraid of him as his Afghan followers were devoted to him.

Hemu’s victories made Humayun and his stalwart generals nervous to the point of diffidence.

If an arrow had not made him unconscious, it was quite probable that he might have scored a victory in the Second Battle of Panipat.

Hemu, who established the ‘Hindu Raj’ in North India in October, 1556, was undoubtedly a great general, forceful administrator, matchless statesman, worthy diplomat, a successful commander and a resourceful ruler. He was one of the best leaders in peace as well as war in the medieval India.

According to Dr KC Yadav, a prominent historian, Hemu deserves a better treatment, a larger attention and a bigger space. His rise was India’s rise and his fall was India’s fall.

Honour sought for Jugti Ram’s widow

Sonepat, February 28
The National 1984 Victim Justice and Welfare Society has urged the Central Government to honour the widow of ASI Jugti Ram of the Delhi police who risked his life and saved lives of a number of persons during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The society has also demanded recruitment of a son of Jugti Ram in the Delhi police as a token of reward for his role in saving precious lives. Jugti Ram expired in 2006.

A five-member team of the society, led by its president Babu Singh Dukhia, from Tilak Nagar, Delhi, recently visited the family of Jugti Ram at Rathdhana village near here to express its gratitude for the courage shown by him while saving innocent lives. Dukhia informed that during riots, Jugti Ram gave shelter to a number of Sikh families in police station and later took them to a relief camp at his own risk. For this, Dukhia alleged, Jugti Ram became target of the authorities and he along with 72 police personnel was placed under suspension. Though other police personnel were reinstated soon, the authorities took eight years to revoke his suspension in 1992.

Indians pioneered missiles, Tipu Sultan used similar weapon

Coimbatore, June 28
Indians are pioneers in missile technology, since Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan used a weapon resembling these missiles, when he fought against the British rule, said Sivathanupillai, a leading scientist.

The small launchers, packed with explosives, moved forward using a similar technology that is being used now, he added. Since this technology was in its inception stage and the materials available were not sophisticated, the missiles could only hit the target at a distance of 1 to 2 kilometers, he added. He also explained the underlying principles behind BrahMos, Agni and the Nag and the small rockets developed by Tipu Sultan.

Attending a session titled “Scientific Tamil” at the World Classical Tamil Conference that concluded yesterday, the scientist said a few warriors in the northern districts of Tamil Nadu manufactured these missiles. Tipu’s arms godowns were located at Dharmapuri and Arcot. It was at these places that the missiles were manufactured. The British rulers, who defeated Tippu Sultan, finally raided these godowns and were amazed at the new technology. The rockets were taken to England and were on display at London Museum, Sivathanupillai said.

‘Indian civilization first on earth’

Sivathanupillai also called for research on the Indian Ocean below Tamil Nadu. He said that it would reveal that the Indian civilization was the first on earth and Indians the first human beings on the planet. The scientist said a large continent called Lemur existed in the Indian Ocean.

This name was given to the human beings while they were evolving from the apes. He said the continent was 50 times larger than present Tamil Nadu. He quoted verses from ancient Tamil literature that a great landmass, ruled by Kaisinavazhudhi, a Tamil king, got immersed in the sea due to a natural disaster.
